James 1st Duke of Monmouth
James 1st Duke of Monmouth (1649-1685). James was the illegitimate son of Charles II, fought for the British in the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-1674), and was beheaded in 1685 after a failed attempt to depose James II, in what was called the Monmouth Rebellion. Illustration by Sir Peter Lely.
